The original Clay Dimensions Ceramics Studio was owned and operated by renowned San Diego artist Rhoda Lopez. When she retired in 1983 the remaining seven affiliated associates re-organized as Clay Associates, achieving non-profit status in 1986. In 1993 the studio purchased the property at 3667 Adams Avenue. Here we continued offering classes to 40 students and studio space to 7 associates. In 1998 we acquired the adjacent property. This additional space allows us to now serve 110 students and 9 associates. Many still remember the old studio at 1735 Adams Avenue, which always evoked its former life as a silk factory, complete with worms. Though much smaller than our present studio it is still missed for its endearing intimacy and funk.
Today at Clay Associates we function in the same spirit and with the same attention to our collective aesthetic as we did since our inception. We strive to develop and change to meet and embrace the dynamics of the culture we live in.
We have forged collaborations with local institutions such as High Tech High, San Diego Pottery Tour and Art Around Adams - to promote and advance the learning of ceramic arts.
